SM Cares, the corporate social responsibility arm of SM Supermalls, has launched a new line of SM Eco Bags as part of its efforts to help protect and preserve the environment.
“At SM, we believe that environmental protection equates to business efficiency…. It has been part of our corporate culture to always try and meet the needs of the present and the future,” says Hans Sy, president of SM Prime Holdings Inc. and SM Cares.
Present during the event held at SM Megamall were Mandaluyong Mayor Benhur Abalos and Sen. Loren Legarda. Also accounted for were NGO officials and students from Metro Manila's different schools, colleges and universities.
Annie Garcia, SM Supermalls president, enjoined the youth to take a firm stand in being at the forefront of environmental protection initiatives.
Among SM's efforts at helping protect the environment are the Green Film Festival and hosting the visit of Nobel Peace Prize winner and staunch environmentalist Al Gore.
Former Environment Secretary Elisea Gozun was also there to remind everyone about “changing the way we consume.” She shared that among the three main reasons for the world’s garbage, it is technology that tops the list.
When the first line of SM reusable bags were introduced for grocery shoppers last year, plastic bag consumption dropped by 30 percent. That means a reduction in the energy and water consumed in producing plastic bags and less plastic produced means less garbage.
